HE IS A UN VOLUNTEER WHO STARTED BLOGGING WITH A SMALL NOKIA PHONE AND IS NOW AN INTERNATIONAL BLOGGER
He is 22 years old and his name is Ebenezar Barisua Wikina. He is from Kono community in Rivers state and is the first child of five children. He comes from a normal background of his father being a baker and an ex-footballer,his mother is a horticulturist. Despite these,he found a dream and is living it.
He looks shy,but a word with him will tell of how highly intelligent he is. He did a diploma in electrical/electronics engineering between 2010 to 2012 at the Rivers state college of arts and science but then decided to make a "hard decision" of changing from science to arts in order to "pursue what he was made for". He said that he studied sciences because his father thought that arts courses are not economically viable in Nigeria. He said also that he saw the delay as a learning time rather than wasted years. "Direction is more important than speed,some people are going nowhere fast"
"I discovered the UN online volunteering service in 2013,and since I had a little Nokia phone that gave me access to the internet,I decided to sign up",he said. He started blogging with a small Nokia phone and a blogger blog known as "WRITE PARAGRAPH".
Wikina started volunteering before he got into the UN programme.
"At 10,I was already a member of voluntary organisations like The Royal Ambassadors of Nigeria. so when the opportunity for UN volunteering came, it was already natural to me".He said.
Using his his blog "write paragraph",he found a problem that no one cared about and became an instant solution to it. His diligence earned him a license to organise "West Africa's only TEDxYouth event in 2014.
According to him,"my major plus is the fact that I have gotten so much experimental knowledge in the area of my passion,and my value has increased so much that even when people now cry about the unavailability of jobs,I think I have turned down a couple of jobs in the pasts months alone,and I didn't have to write a CV for them.
His advice to the youths is that they should discover themselves and the reason God created them,because life is more than getting a job to get an income.
He is currently studying journalism at the International Institute of Journalism. He has also completed a basic broadcast presentation course at the Alpha Institute of Broadcast and Communication,Port-Harcourt. In his resume,he is a writer for the Huffington post,copywriter and co-founder of Write Paragraph,a UN online volunteer,contributor for Global voices,Net opps,opportunity desk. He has also interviewed Malala,CNN freedom project an others.
