The director general of The Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Dr. Gloria Elemo has said that the country can save N128bn for the nation if the 5% cassava inclusion in bread baking is applied. She said this at a capacity building conference seminar of the Commerce and Industry Association of Nigeria in Lagos. The theme of the seminar was; 'Industrial Infrastructure Development: The Private and Public Initiatives'.
She said also that the initiative is capable of creating three million jobs in the cassava value chain, and that the N128bn will be used for wheat importation. She also stated that over 1,300 graduates were trained in 2013 on various skills such as machine fabrication and commodity processing,etc.
She rated Nigeria as very low in Research and Development and called for huge investments in research, technology and innovation for the nation to become developed in the near future.
"The R&D investments in Nigeria only accounts for 0.01% of global expenditure and consequently ranked 94 out of 134 nations in global competitiveness in 2010". she said.
